Delegation and Information Flow

I’ve noticed what seems like another super common trait with people, and it is that they have to know all the details of everything. Its like humans don’t like to not know about how something is done or works. I suppose that’s why there are so many popular documentaries and books about “The Secret Inner Workings of X Revealed”.

Here’s an example. Let’s say you’re running a staff meeting, and you delegate to someone, “I’d like to see data X with some charts and graphs, so we can visualize and analyze trends and patterns better.” Pretty straightforward, right? But invariably someone will speak up with,

“Well how are you going to do that? If its a csv you can probably just load it into Excel, do some charting that way. But is it a lot of data? You might be Tableau. Or you could drop the files into an S3 bucket and launch a QuickSight instance.”

But the reality is (especially if it’s not your task), it doesn’t matter. All you need to worry about, as a leader and a delegator, is whether you get the charts and graphs you want. You have hired or coached and mentored the people on your team to where you trust them to do their job, and you have organizational guardrails in place to prevent anything security or financially irresponsible happening.

So don’t stress out over the “how” too much, especially with tasks like this where it can be clearly delegated and the “how” doesn’t even really matter that much. Once you figure this out, you’ll find a LOT of your stress goes away because you’re no longer spending mental energy thinking and worrying about things that literally don’t matter.
