How Much Detail Do You Need Up Front? Part Two

I wanted to follow up on my last blog post.

Now I am aware that someone can read that post and just tear it to shreds. The assumption is that the electrician is working towards an experience-based and intuition-driven understanding of the outcome. But technology marches forward, and we have to question whether the electrician has kept up. Some examples:

Well what about newfangled outlets that have USB ports instead of plugs?

And what about using dimmer switches in some places?

Or for that matter, what about a house using all wireless smart switches, and everything can be controlled from your phone?

To be fair, it requires electricians (and software architects) to do research and continuous learning and be in the loop on these types of high-level options. But again, a skilled and experienced electrician knows what questions to ask to shape the desired outcome, and it doesn’t have to be a long and drawn out exercise.

“Do you want to control all the lights from your phone? Are there outlets you want to plug your phone chargers in to directly? For that matter, what’s your budget here, both money and time wise?”

That initial conversation should be enough to get the right professional started on a path to success, rather than getting bogged down in minutiae that will likely change anyway. Trust in their expertise and the iterative process is key to achieving the desired outcome efficiently.
